A Vietnam veteran named Scott Harrison spent some 26 years hand carving 56 whimsical animals, from a moose to a mermaid, after a small music box helped carry him through the war. He set them on a restored 1910 carousel turning to the music of a vintage band organ. It is a joyful, only in Nederland kind of stop, and it delights visitors of every age.
Barker Reservoir Right at the edge of town, Barker Reservoir laps against Nederland's banks, framed by foothills and ringed by mountain views. The Peak to Peak Byway Drive Nederland anchors the southern end of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, Highway 72, which winds north toward Ward, Estes Park, and the eastern gateway of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is one of the most beautiful drives in the state, threading along the edge of the Indian Peaks Wilderness with long views of the Continental Divide. Winter Driving Caution This is real mountain driving, and January conditions demand respect. The canyon and the byway are scenic but winding, and snow and ice arrive fast. If a storm is moving through, it is wiser to wait for a clear window than to push a snowy mountain road.
